An Oakland County woman narrowly avoided losing her $1 million Powerball prize by claiming it just hours before the ticket’s expiration. Theresa Lynchosky, 63, from Rochester Hills, confirmed by the Michigan Lottery, claimed her winning ticket from July 14, 2025, almost a year later. Lynchosky stated, “I decided to wait to claim the prize for personal reasons and didn’t tell anyone about the big win until last week when I told my best friend. I was so happy to finally share the news with someone, and I’m even happier to be here claiming my prize after waiting a year.”

Lucky Numbers and a Long Wait

The winning numbers were 8, 12, 45, 46, and 63, which Lynchosky, a regular Powerball player, chose. Over the past year, she adjusted to the reality of her major win, initially finding it hard to believe. However, with time, she became accustomed to the idea and expressed that the delayed claim made her feel more content.

Playing Close to the Deadline

Lynchosky’s decision to wait nearly a full year isn’t entirely uncommon among jackpot winners, who sometimes prefer privacy as they get their affairs in order. The expiration of lottery winnings varies by state, with Michigan allowing one year from the draw date to claim prizes. Had Lynchosky not stepped forward, the unclaimed winnings would have been redirected to the state’s School Aid Fund, a fate that befalls untimely claims.

While lottery rules differ across jurisdictions, the phenomenon of last-minute claims often captures public attention. Michigan’s Lottery Commission has noted several instances where winners waited until the final days before stepping forward. Still, the Commission consistently advises winners to claim promptly to avoid complicationsβ€”or worse, forfeiture. As for Lynchosky, the next steps are a bit clearer. She intends to consult financial advisors in the coming weeks to manage her newfound wealth responsibly. But her story, though unique, serves as a reminder of the importance of timely action in the unpredictable world of lotteries.
