BGaming has released “Yokai,” a new slot game born from the distinctive artwork of Portuguese street artist GonΓ§alo MAR, marking a creative departure from traditional game development methods. The launch is part of BGaming’s ART Collab series, which seeks to blend contemporary art with interactive gaming experiences.

Creative Process Reimagined

Unlike usual practices where theme or mechanics drive game development, “Yokai” began with an artist’s vision. Ruslan Shakhlovich, BGaming’s game designer, explained that developing the game around GonΓ§alo MAR’s art introduced an entirely new creative workflow. The artwork dictated characters, symbols, and animations, turning the process into a more collaborative and exploratory adventure. “It felt much more collaborative and exploratory than a typical release,” Shakhlovich noted, emphasizing that this method allowed the game to stay true to the artist’s vision and infuse the slot with a unique personality. Initially, the team grappled with how to translate MAR’s street art style into an engaging slot game. Still, “Instead of fitting the artwork into an existing idea, we built the whole experience around it,” Shakhlovich said. This reversal ensured that every visual element was not only part of the game but also integral to its overall feel and engagement factor.

The Genesis of ART Collab

The ART Collab series kicked off with MAR due to a previous collaboration during a Lisbon exhibition. His signature style, especially the finger-fish motifs, offered a distinctive artistic voice that seamlessly married with BGaming’s vision. Shakhlovich highlighted that the partnership wasn’t just about featuring a famous artist β€” it was about bringing MAR’s vibrant world to life within a digital format. GonΓ§alo MAR’s involvement went beyond mere visual contribution; he was immersed in the game development process. As the game took shape, his insights on maintaining the essence of his artwork were invaluable. This collaboration wasn’t about simply transposing his art onto a digital platform; it was an engaged dialogue to ensure authenticity while adapting to gaming requirements. And development took longer than usual, with a production timeline of about nine months, demonstrating the depth of this creative exchange.

Integrating large-scale street art into a mobile game posed major challenges. The need to translate detailed artwork into symbols visible on small screens required strategic simplifications. “Some of GonΓ§alo’s original ideas were too detailed or too complex to work as game symbols,” Shakhlovich admitted. The team worked meticulously to retain the artwork’s essence while ensuring clarity and functionality in gameplay. The game features, like animated transitions between base and bonus rounds and interactive elements, were directly influenced by MAR’s designs. Still, his characters didn’t just decorate the reels but inspired dynamic interactions. An example includes a Samurai character who slices the moon with his katana to unveil the bonus game, a concept born directly from the art itself.

Lessons and the Road Ahead

“Yokai” taught BGaming much about cross-disciplinary collaboration, setting a precedent for future ART Collab projects. The project forged a path for meaningful artist-developer partnerships, where continual dialogue and mutual influence shape the creative outcome. Shakhlovich emphasizes the importance of having the artist involved from the very beginning, acknowledging that “the best ideas came through regular conversations.”

Looking forward, BGaming plans to expand the ART Collab series by seeking out other artists willing to explore their unique visions within an interactive medium. The company hopes to offer players fresh experiences while also bringing contemporary art into new digital spaces. As for the next steps, player responses to “Yokai” will guide the series’ development. Now, the industry watches to see how this new approach will be received in gaming markets worldwide.
