Front-of-shirt sponsorship deals between gambling firms and sports clubs aren’t going anywhere in the UKβ€”despite looming restrictions. Championship club Birmingham City has teamed up with Coral, a well-known licensed operator, for the 2026-27 season. This happens at a time when there’s an industry push to close a loophole allowing offshore gambling firms to display their logos on players’ shirts.

Coral’s First Front-of-Shirt Sponsorship Deal

For the first time in its century-long history, Coral will feature as a front-of-shirt sponsor, despite a history with Birmingham City as an official partner for the past two seasons. Starting next season, Coral’s logo will be prominently displayed on both the men’s and women’s shirts. The partnership aims to strengthen ties with supporters and the wider community. Still, it’s about more than just brand visibility; it’s intended to foster a connection that contributes both “on and off the pitch.” Birmingham City CEO Jeremy Dale remarked on the partnership, saying Coral has become not just a sponsor, but a trusted partner. “From creating memorable experiences for fans to raising more than Β£40,000 for the Birmingham City Foundation, Coral has shown genuine dedication to our club,” Dale added.

Entain UK and Ireland managing director Bejay Patel expressed optimism about the renewed partnership, emphasizing the strengthening bond with the club. While the Premier League announced a voluntary ban on such sponsorship deals in 2023, set to take effect in the 2026/2027 season, Birmingham Cityβ€”playing in the EFLβ€”remains exempt from this rule. As a result, clubs have found creative ways to continue these deals, such as featuring logos on sleeves instead of fronts. Midnite, another gambling brand, has already opted for alternative placements like sleeve sponsorships, securing multiple team deals. Entain has also been exploring similar avenues. However, the company’s Chief Executive, Stella David, has called for governmental intervention to close loopholes that allow offshore brands to advertise.

Market and Regulatory Context

The sponsorship market in the UK is complex, with a mix of regulatory crackdowns and ongoing partnerships. And industry data shows that while domestic operators like Coral face increasing scrutiny, offshore brands take advantage of relaxed regulations. This isn’t the first time there’s been tension between local operators and overseas competition. The timing of these sponsorship deals is notableβ€”right before the 2026/2027 season and the full implementation of new rules. The uncertainty surrounding these regulations has left many clubs and operators in a bit of a bind. And whether the new measures will actually curtail offshore advertising remains to be seenβ€”a question that keeps industry insiders on their toes.

Looking Ahead

The full impact of these partnerships will unfold as the season progresses. For now, Birmingham City and Coral look to maintain their community rapport while navigating the changing sponsorship terrain. Updates on potential changes to the loophole are expected from industry regulators later this year. Will there be more adjustments to the UK sponsorship framework? The short answer: nobody knows yet.
