Cedar Crossing Casino & Entertainment Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is set to open earlier than anticipated, moving up its grand opening from New Year’s Eve to mid-November 2026. This $275 million investment by Peninsula Pacific Entertainment (P2E) is ahead of schedule, thanks to favorable conditions during construction.

Early Completion Despite Challenges

Stefan Huba, P2E’s chief development officer, attributed the timely progress to strategic planning, solid architecture, and favorable weather. He emphasized the role local labor played in meeting the project’s timelines. “We’ve been fortunate to partner with many Iowa contractors and trade unions,” Huba said. However, the project wasn’t without hurdles. A longstanding lawsuit from Elite Casino Resorts, challenging the 2021 referendum that approved Cedar Crossing, lingered over much of the construction phase until it was dropped last year. And elite Casino Resorts operates the nearby Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, which is likely to face competitive pressures from the new venture.

Entertainment and Local Attractions

Set beside the Cedar River, Cedar Crossing Casino spans 160,000 square feet and includes a 1,500-seat entertainment venue, multiple dining options, and a STEM lab named the Compass Center. Among its culinary offerings is the Clubhouse by Zach Johnson, a steakhouse featuring locally sourced produce. Johnson, an Iowa native and renowned golfer, lends his name to the restaurant as a nod to local roots. On the gaming floor, expect around 700 slot machines, 22 live dealer tables, and a sportsbook. The casino plans to allocate 8% of its net adjusted gross revenue to the Linn County Gaming Association, a large commitment compared to the 3% state mandate.

Big Names and Bigger Plans

The entertainment lineup for Cedar Crossing’s opening is impressive. Old Dominion will headline the launch event at The Event Center on December 5. Following them, a series of notable acts, including comedian Brooks Wheelan and Steve-O from “Jackass,” are slated to perform in December. The venue is also gearing up for a busy 2027, with the Eli Young Band scheduled for January and The Marshall Tucker Band in March. The casino’s event space promises to be a major addition to the regional entertainment circuit.

Future Developments and Industry Context

Cedar Crossing’s early opening comes as part of a broader trend of casino developments in Iowaβ€”an industry not entirely immune to market volatility but one that’s shown resilience. Industry analysts have previously noted that new entries could challenge existing operators, yet also spur market growth by attracting tourists. The exact impact of Cedar Crossing on the local gambling market remains to be seen, especially how it might affect its neighbor, Riverside Casino. The opening of Cedar Crossing Casino & Entertainment Center is shaping up to be a major event for Cedar Rapids, with employment opportunities expanding as positions across various departments are filled. Cedar Crossing’s completion and launch could set a new standard for gaming and entertainment venues in the Midwest. The casino will continue its hiring push as the opening date approaches, preparing for an influx of patrons eager to experience its offerings.
