Entain Posts strong Growth in H1 2026 Despite Tax Challenges

Entain surprised analysts with a strong performance in the first half of 2026, underscoring its resilience in the face of increased gambling taxes in the UK and Ireland. The company reported a notable rise in net gaming revenue (NGR) across these key markets, bolstered by strong player engagement during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Surge in UK and Ireland Revenues

In the UK and Ireland, Entain saw its NGR grow by 8% to GBP 1.18 billion ($1.60 billion). And online NGR was the standout, climbing 13% to GBP 640.4 million ($866.1 million), with both sports betting and gaming contributing to this double-digit increase. But retail NGR also grew, though more modestly, by 2% to GBP 536.4 million ($725.5 million). The company’s ability to thrive despite facing higher taxes marks a major achievement, given the British government’s recent decision to increase online gambling taxes as part of a broader fiscal strategy. CEO Stella David expressed satisfaction with the company’s performance, citing continuing momentum and focused execution. “Our strong start to the year highlights the strength of our operations and our ability to deliver consistent growth,” she noted. However, it’s clear that maintaining this growth amidst tax hikes won’t be easy—something industry insiders are watching closely.

Strategic Moves and Market Exits

Entain is also moving ahead with plans to trim its presence in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), aiming to streamline operations and cut debt. The company recently sold 20% of its stake in Entain Holdings CEE to joint venture partner EMMA Capital for EUR 425 million (about $497 million), marking a strategic withdrawal from the region. This phased exit is part of an effort to focus on more profitable markets. But david emphasized the strategic focus on shareholder value: “We’re becoming a more efficient and better-integrated business.” The impending job cuts—over 500 roles—as outlined by CFO Michael Snape, are part of this efficiency drive.

International Expansion Continues

Entain’s international business delivered a 7% increase in NGR to $1.85 billion, with notable gains in regions like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. The online segment led growth, rising 8% to $1.64 billion, while international retail grew by 2% to $219.1 million. Even in CEE—where Entain is scaling back—online NGR saw a 6% rise to $362.8 million, although retail revenue fell sharply by 19%, likely influencing the company’s decision to exit the region. Entain’s strategy appears to be paying off, but the future remains unpredictable. The company’s financial health is still dependent on navigating the complexities of multiple regulatory environments and market conditions.

Looking Ahead

Entain’s focus on innovation is clear, with projects like the “Seven” app, a new free-to-play sports platform, positioned to attract younger customers. While the company’s recent financial achievements are impressive, questions about the impact of external factors like UK tax hikes and market dynamics in CEE linger. The board will likely address some of these challenges when it meets later this year to discuss future strategy and investment priorities.
