The Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Dutch Gaming Authority, has initiated a partnership with Roda JC Kerkrade, a professional soccer club, to conduct a comprehensive analysis of sports betting behaviors among young adults in the Parkstad region. This collaboration reflects a growing concern over the normalization of gambling among the youth and aims to address this issue through empirical research.

The KSA has set in motion an extensive study designed to shed light on the perspectives and habits of younger adults when it comes to sports betting. This initiative seeks to determine if additional awareness campaigns are necessary to mitigate the normalization of such activities among the younger demographic.

Roda JC Kerkrade has distinguished itself as the only soccer club in the Netherlands that has consistently turned down sponsorship offers from sports betting companies. The club asserts that aligning with gambling enterprises contradicts its core values and its mission to contribute positively to the community it serves. This principled stance positions Roda JC as a fitting partner for the KSA, sharing a mutual commitment to highlighting the potential dangers of gambling and the normalization of sports betting among young people.

Central to this partnership is the research that will delve into various aspects of sports betting among youth. The study will explore the prevalence of betting activities among young adults in Parkstad and beyond, assess their expenditure patterns, and examine their perceptions and misconceptions about sports betting. These insights are crucial for understanding the youth’s interaction with betting and identifying areas that require educational intervention.

According to the KSA, the study is scheduled to be conducted from November to December 2025, with findings anticipated for release in early 2026. These results will set the groundwork for future educational and communication strategies aimed at raising awareness about the risks associated with betting, such as the potential for significant financial losses and the influence of peer pressure.

Jordens Peters, the general manager of Roda JC, emphasized the necessity of addressing what he describes as a social pressure to participate in sports betting, a concern that is particularly prevalent in the Dutch market. He stated that this collaboration with the KSA is a natural extension of the club’s commitment to gaining valuable insights and crafting initiatives that can effectively combat problem gambling.

Echoing this sentiment, KSA’s chair, Michel Groothuizen, expressed satisfaction with the partnership, praising Roda JC as a trustworthy ally in this endeavor. He noted that this collaboration is pivotal for comprehending how younger individuals engage with sports betting.

However, not everyone agrees on the need for such initiatives. Some industry analysts argue that focusing on education and awareness might not be enough to curb the issue of problem gambling. They suggest that stricter regulations and more robust enforcement of existing laws could yield more immediate results. These analysts argue that while understanding betting behaviors is important, without significant policy changes, the impact of educational campaigns might be limited.

Nonetheless, the KSA and Roda JC believe that through understanding and education, they can create a more informed youth population that is less susceptible to the allure of gambling. The outcomes of their joint research will likely inform not only future campaigns but also possibly influence policy discussions on how to best protect younger individuals from the potential harms of gambling.

The gambling industry in the Netherlands, much like in other parts of the world, is at a crossroads. There is a palpable tension between the economic benefits of a thriving betting market and the social responsibility to prevent addiction and protect vulnerable demographics. The KSA and clubs like Roda JC are at the forefront of navigating this complex landscape, striving to strike a balance that prioritizes the well-being of individuals while acknowledging the gaming sector’s economic contributions.

Integrating the research findings into practical applications will be a key challenge for the KSA and Roda JC moving forward. They aim to develop initiatives that resonate with young people and effectively communicate the potential dangers of gambling. By fostering a dialogue within communities, they hope to empower individuals to make informed choices and resist societal pressures.

As the study progresses, it will be essential to maintain transparency and share findings with stakeholders, including other clubs, educational institutions, and policymakers. This transparency will ensure that the strategies developed are based on comprehensive data and that they address the real concerns of young bettors.

The collaboration between the KSA and Roda JC Kerkrade stands as a testament to the proactive steps being taken to understand and address gambling behaviors among young adults. By prioritizing research and awareness, they are laying the groundwork for a future where gambling is approached with caution and where young individuals are equipped with the knowledge to navigate this complex landscape safely.
