Star Sydney License Suspension Extended for Six Months

The New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has chosen to keep the license suspension of Star Sydney in place for another six months. This decision came after a thorough review of the casino’s operations, further delaying the venue’s aspirations to resume gaming activities within 2025.

Star Sydney has faced compounding challenges as it struggles to align with regulatory expectations. The NICC concluded that the property must continue its current oversight, having not yet fulfilled the requirements necessary to reinstate its operational license. The regulator clarified that the license suspension is to be maintained until March 1, 2026. This period allows Star Sydney time to demonstrate compliance and to work under the supervision of Mr. Weeks, whose role as Manager has been extended until March 31, 2026, pending approval from the Minister.

The casino’s difficulties are rooted in the findings from the notorious Bell Inquiry, which uncovered the venue’s involvement in money laundering and other illegal activities facilitated by influential Asian junkets. These revelations highlighted significant lapses in Star Sydney’s internal controls and procedures, leading to a failure to prevent such illicit dealings. The subsequent review in 2024 echoed these concerns, indicating that the property still needed considerable improvements to meet the regulatory body’s expectations.

A key issue identified in past assessments was the attitude of Star Sydney’s former leadership, which was seen as adversarial rather than reformative. The leadership had not prioritized genuine reforms, hindering the property’s path to operational recovery. In contrast, the newly appointed management team has expressed a commitment to collaboration with the regulator. Steve McCann, formerly of Crown Resorts, now leads this effort to restore Star Sydney’s operations. He remarked, “We recognize the need for ongoing efforts but are determined to fulfill our Remediation Plan to ensure safe and compliant business practices. The Star is dedicated to maintaining an open and constructive dialogue with the Manager, the NICC, and the New South Wales Government.”

There is a clear understanding from the new leadership that the next six months will be crucial. During this time, Star Sydney aims to implement the necessary changes to demonstrate its suitability as a license holder. McCann emphasized the importance of this period, indicating that their goal is to prepare the property for its eventual relaunch and to prove its commitment to all stakeholders.

However, the decision to extend the suspension has sparked a variety of opinions within the industry. Some experts view the NICC’s stringent measures as a necessary step towards ensuring regulatory compliance and restoring public confidence in the casino’s operations. They argue that this rigorous approach is essential for maintaining the integrity of the gambling industry in New South Wales.

Conversely, others believe that the prolonged suspension could have negative economic impacts on the region, particularly affecting local businesses and employment linked to the casino’s operations. Critics of the suspension suggest that while regulatory oversight is crucial, the NICC should also consider the broader economic implications of such decisions.

Despite these differing perspectives, the priority remains clear for Star Sydney and its management team: to work diligently towards meeting regulatory demands and rebuilding trust with both the government and the public. The coming months will serve as a defining period for the casino, as it seeks to overcome past challenges and lay a solid foundation for its future operations.
