Global lottery operator Allwyn has stepped up its commitment to player safety with a new initiative focusing on academic research. The company recently announced the first awardees of funding from its Player Protection Lab, a program intended to explore and test ways to mitigate gambling-related harm. This move comes as the UK grapples with rising problem gambling rates.

Funding Paves Way for Research

Two projects will share the EUR 100,000 ($115,000) funding. Michael Auer, a notable figure in responsible gambling research, leads one project. He aims to analyze behavioral data and use personalized messages to alert players about potentially harmful behaviors. Still, this study will incorporate real betting data and player feedback to examine the effectiveness of these messages in encouraging users to set limits or take breaks. The second project, spearheaded by Newton University, seeks to create a Safe Gambling Assessment Tool tailored for younger players. This tool will analyze how Gen Z engages with risks in digital spacesβ€”where gaming and social media increasingly overlap with betting. Still, the project aspires to understand how younger players manage their betting habits online compared to traditional, land-based settings. Both projects are expected to conclude in 2027, with the findings to be published in peer-reviewed journals. Allwyn emphasizes that the research aims to develop practical tools for its operations and potentially benefit the wider industry.

UK Gambling Concerns on the Rise

The initiative’s timing is significant. Recent studies have highlighted troubling trends in gambling behaviors. But for instance, a ScienceDirect study found that a small fraction of users is responsible for most spending, while surveys show many gamblers hesitate to seek help even when financially struggling. Allwyn’s leadership stresses that this program is part of a broader strategy to remain proactive and innovative. However, there are hurdles. Deploying personalized messages requires extensive data, raising privacy concerns. Moreover, developing tools for younger audiences involves striking a balance between engagement and intervention, a challenge in regulated markets. “To remain at the forefront of player safety, we initiated the Allwyn Player Protection Lab to align insight, technology, and innovation in proactive initiatives,” says Robert ChvΓ‘tal, Allwyn’s CEO.

Industry Moving Towards Proactive Measures

The creation of the Player Protection Lab underscores a shift in the industry’s approach to harm prevention. Traditional safeguards such as deposit limits and self-exclusion programs may no longer suffice. There’s a growing recognition that the industry needs more precise, proactive measures. Allwyn, by advancing this research, positions itself as a leader in player protectionβ€”anticipating changes rather than merely reacting to regulatory pressures. The company aims to integrate the research findings into its operations and, potentially, to influence industry-wide practices. Looking forward, the fruits of this research could reshape player safety strategies across the sector. The projects are set to run until 2027, at which point their results will be shared publicly. The hope is these insights will inform more effective approaches to reducing gambling harm in the future.
