The former Poker Palace is about to get a new lease on life, reemerging as Club Fortune North. Undergoing a broad renovation for the past nine months, this locals’ favorite is set to soft-open on July 19, with the grand opening scheduled for July 22. Reno-based Truckee Gaming, which acquired the property last October for $20 million, spearheaded this transformation after discovering layers of outdated infrastructure. The project experienced several delays, initially targeting an April opening, due to the need for an extensive rebuild.

Truckee Gaming’s Investment and Vision

Truckee Gaming, led by seasoned casino operator Ferenc Szony, is pouring millions into revamping the 4.8-acre site. Szony, with roots at Sands Regent and Affinity Gaming, commented in May on the unforeseen scope of the renovations, describing it as nearly a complete redo. The overhaul includes installing new slot machines, updating gaming systems, and redesigning the bar and restaurant. There’s a new kitchen to handle more diners and a thorough modernization inside and out. But notably, Club Fortune North won’t offer poker or traditional table games but will feature a race and sportsbook through Boomer’s Sportsbook.

Past and Present: A Local Classic

For over five decades, Poker Palaceβ€”run by the Coleman familyβ€”was a North Las Vegas staple, known for its low-limit bets and neighborly charm. Located nine miles from the Strip near Nellis Air Force Base, it catered primarily to locals, with some blackjack tables as low as $3 per hand. In a previous zero-star review, Jeff Haney of the Las Vegas Sun noted its appeal to the neighborhood crowd, stating that tourists finding themselves there were likely lost. Despite the sale, Truckee Gaming aims to maintain that community feel with its upcoming launch.

Nevada’s gaming market isn’t what it used to be. As the state shifts from reliance on tourist-heavy venues along the Strip, locals’ casinos like Club Fortune North are gaining traction. According to industry data, suburban casinos have seen patronage from an increasingly local customer base amidst rising competition. But whether Truckee Gaming’s hefty investment delivers the expected returns is something only timeβ€”and customersβ€”will determine. Truckee Gaming’s portfolio already includes similar properties throughout Nevada, from Club Fortune in Henderson to multiple Gold Ranch and Pioneer Crossing locations. This experience in operating locals’ casinos could be key to their success, as they’ve navigated similar transformations before.

Looking Ahead: Opening and Future Plans

The soft-opening of Club Fortune North is just days away, with full operations kicking off on July 22. Future plans for the casino remain under wraps, but industry insiders will be watching closely to see how this reopening plays out against a backdrop of broader market shifts in Nevada.
