Michigan Cracks Down on Illegal Online Gambling Platforms

On September 24, 2025, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) took decisive action against unauthorized online gambling by issuing cease-and-desist orders to eight unlicensed platforms. These operators, which include Bspin Casino, Everygame Casino, Everygame Sports Casino, Kudos Casino, PlayCroco Online Casino, Slots of Vegas, Spin Dimension, and Super Slots, were found to be providing online gambling services to Michigan residents without the requisite state licenses. Their operations were deemed in violation of the Lawful Internet Gaming Act, the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act, and various sections of the Michigan Penal Code.

Henry Williams, the executive director of the MGCB, expressed concerns about the risks these illegal operators pose to consumers. He noted that while they attempt to present themselves as legitimate entertainment providers, they operate without the necessary safeguards and regulatory oversight. This exposes players to significant risks, as these platforms do not adhere to standards of fairness and accountability required of licensed operators. Williams reiterated the MGCB’s dedication to enforcing state laws and maintaining a regulated gambling environment.

Williams also highlighted the problem of deceptive online advertising, which can lure unsuspecting players into engaging with these illegal platforms. To combat this, the MGCB has launched the “Play It Smart, Michigan” campaign, aimed at educating residents on how to identify and avoid unlicensed gambling websites. The campaign provides resources and information to help the public differentiate between legal and illegal gaming options, including a comprehensive list of MGCB-licensed internet gaming and sports betting operators on the agency’s website.

The underlying issue prompting these orders stems from Michigan’s legal framework, which stipulates that only MGCB-licensed operators can offer internet gaming and sports betting within the state. The eight platforms targeted by the recent orders were operating outside this regulatory boundary, thus violating state laws. These operators have been instructed to cease their operations immediately, with noncompliance potentially leading to further legal actions in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Attorney General.

The broader context of this enforcement action highlights the importance of regulated gambling environments. Licensed operators are subject to strict regulatory standards, including independent testing and consumer protection regulations, ensuring a safe and fair gaming experience for players. In contrast, unlicensed platforms lack these critical protections, making them inherently risky for consumers.

There are those who argue that the proliferation of illegal sites indicates a demand for more diverse gaming options that are not currently available through licensed operators. However, the MGCB maintains that the risks far outweigh any potential benefits. The agency views its role as not only regulatory but also protective, ensuring that Michigan residents are not exposed to the pitfalls of unregulated gambling.

As part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard the gambling ecosystem, the MGCB is also collaborating with other regulatory bodies and law enforcement agencies to monitor and enforce compliance. This multi-pronged approach underscores the seriousness with which Michigan treats the issue of illegal gambling.

To put the situation into perspective, the crackdown comes at a time when legal gambling has become a significant economic driver for Michigan. The state’s regulated gaming industry contributes substantially to state revenues, supports local economies, and creates jobs. Ensuring that this market remains fair and secure is crucial for its continued growth and success.

Interestingly, the news of the crackdown coincides with reports of a few fortunate residents winning substantial sums from the Michigan lottery and Powerball. These stories serve as a reminder of the potential benefits of legal gambling, where players can enjoy the games with the assurance of a regulated environment and reliable payouts.

In conclusion, the MGCB’s actions emphasize the critical role of regulatory oversight in the gambling industry. By targeting illegal operators, the Board aims to protect consumers, preserve the integrity of the gaming market, and ensure that all gambling activities within Michigan are conducted fairly and legally. As the landscape of online gambling continues to evolve, the MGCB remains committed to adapting its strategies to address new challenges and maintain a safe gaming environment for all.
