Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) has greenlit additional operators and suppliers for the impending launch of online casinos and sportsbooks in Alberta. In a recent update, AGLC announced that four more online casino content suppliers and operators are now on board. Notably, Genius Sports, a key player in sports betting data, is also set to debut. Mark your calendars — the launch kicks off on July 13th.

New Entrants to the Canadian Market

Among the latest additions, two iGaming operators are making their debut in the Canadian market, while two others are expanding beyond Ontario. Luxury Casino and Delta Casino are already familiar names in Ontario. Still, meanwhile, newcomers Vegas Club Casino and DAZN BET are making their first foray into Alberta. DAZN BET, which carries the brand of the live sports streaming service, had secured its license in Ontario as early as January but has yet to launch. Originally announced in April 2022, the brand is now poised to enter the Alberta digital betting scene. The roster expansion continues with the inclusion of bet365, added last Monday, alongside content suppliers like Casimba Gaming, ELK Studios, NetGaming USA, and Rising Digital Corporation.

Alberta Aims for Market Transformation

Alberta’s current market is heavily tilted towards offshore betting options, with estimates suggesting that approximately 70% of gambling activity takes place through unregulated operators. This mirrors Ontario’s situation before it opened its market to private operators. A study by Ipsos revealed a sweeping change post-regulation, as 91.1% of Ontario gamblers now engage with regulated sites. But they surveyed over 2,000 residents aged 19 and older. Industry observers are keen to see if Alberta will follow Ontario’s success in shifting the market from unregulated to legal platforms.

Uncertainties and Expectations

While the expansion is a positive step, questions remain about whether Alberta can replicate Ontario’s regulatory success. The vast offshore market poses a major challenge. Whether Genius Sports’ involvement and the arrival of new operators will sway gamblers towards regulated platforms is anyone’s guess. And what’s clear is that the stakes are high. The outcomes of this rollout could influence future regulatory decisions across the country.

Looking Ahead

With the official launch date set for mid-July, the coming weeks will be crucial. Industry watchers are anxious to see if Alberta’s strategic push into the iGaming sector will create a ripple effect. The results could signal changes in the national approach towards online gambling regulation.
