International sports streamer DAZN has made its debut in the Canadian betting arena with a licensed sports betting and casino platform in Ontario. The company’s new site went live on June 30, setting the stage for DAZN’s North American growth from its European roots. In a market boasting 47 licensed operators and 81 gaming websites, DAZN’s Managing Director for Canada, Richard Rawlinson, highlighted long-term customer trust as a key differentiator in Ontario’s competitive market.

DAZN Enters Ontario’s Crowded Market

Ontario represents DAZN’s first venture beyond Europe, where it has firmly established its operations. But “Ontario stands out as one of the most mature, competitive and highly regulated online gaming markets in North America,” Rawlinson told Casino.org. The operator’s locally-tailored platform features a diverse array of gaming options, including a sportsbook, slots, table games, and live casino offerings. This launch is envisioned as a foundational step for DAZN’s wider Canadian strategy.

Plans for Alberta and Beyond

DAZN has set its sights on Alberta, aiming to become one of the early players when the igaming market opens on July 13. The company emphasized its commitment to blending DAZN’s sports heritage with products customized for Canadian audiences. “We also bring experience from operating in multiple regulated markets, which has given us expertise in areas such as customer-centric product development, compliance, and responsible gaming,” Rawlinson said in a statement.

Unique “Watch and Wager” Strategy

Operating in Spain, Italy, the UK, and Germany, DAZN Bet stands apart from competitors like FanDuel and DraftKings by using its existing sports media platform. Offering live and on-demand sports to millions across more than 200 countries, DAZN aims to convert these viewers into sportsbook customers in Ontario. CEO Shay Segev recently referred to the betting platform as a “complementary product” to its streaming services, capitalizing on its vast audience to engage them further.

Regulatory Context and Uncertainties

Ontario’s highly regulated market poses both opportunities and challenges. With a mature and demanding customer base, operators must offer a unique user experience to thrive. The collaboration with Pragmatic Solutions, announced in 2022, underpins DAZN Bet’s technological framework. Still, whether this will translate into major market penetration remains to be seen. The next major milestone is the anticipated July 13 launch in Alberta. This date could mark another pivotal moment in DAZN’s Canadian expansion journey.
