Shaun Benward, known by his stage name “Shaun Mistery,” has been extradited to Nevada to face multiple charges of casino fraud, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB). Benward, an illusionist and alleged casino cheat, is already serving a 10-year sentence in Iowa for swindling hundreds of dollars from the Grand Falls Casino in 2018. This latest legal entanglement involves three felony counts of fraudulent acts and three felony conspiracy charges related to violations of the Gaming Control Act.

Distraction Tactics and Casino Bans

Benward’s method, according to investigators, involves classic misdirection—distracting roulette dealers with conversation just as betting ends, then disputing chip placements once winning numbers were revealed. Often, it wasn’t a solo act. Still, authorities claim he used accomplices to back his version of events when disputes erupted, putting pressure on dealers to concede to his demands. In an effort to avoid detection, Benward reportedly changed his appearance between visits to casinos. By altering his clothing and hairstyle, he managed to evade surveillance and continue his schemes largely unhindered. He has been blacklisted from 17 Nevada casinos and was added to the state’s Black Book—a list of banned individuals—in December 2023.

Complex Financial Schemes

Prosecutors allege that Benward took elaborate steps to obscure his winnings. He allegedly used a strategy of structuring casino cash-outs to escape federal reporting thresholds. By spreading his transactions across multiple cashiers and splitting larger sums into smaller amounts, he hoped to avoid attracting attention. Sounds complex, but the objective was simple: stay under the radar. The NGCB has flagged similar methods in past cases, affirming their ongoing challenge in combating such sophisticated fraud attempts. Despite the meticulous planning, Benward’s acts eventually caught up to him.

Long Arm of the Law

Benward’s fraudulent escapades aren’t confined to Nevada. The magician had previously evaded capture for seven years, leaving a trail of alleged criminal activities across several states including Pennsylvania, Delaware, Michigan, and more. And he was finally apprehended in Mississippi in April 2025, marking the end of a years-long chase by multiple law enforcement agencies. Kristi Torgerson, the chief of the NGCB’s enforcement division, stated, “The NGCB remains fully committed to locating offenders, wherever they may be, to ensure They’re brought to justice.” It’s not Benward’s first encounter with the law, and according to several agencies, it likely won’t be his last.

Awaiting Trial

Now back in Nevada, Shaun Benward’s day in court will determine the scope of his accountability for the alleged crimes. And the NGCB and other law enforcement bodies are keen to see the magician finally held accountable. His trial date is yet to be set, but it’s expected that proceedings will begin sometime early next year.
